Parent Consultation
“Behind every great child is a parent pretty sure they are screwing it up.” - unknown
Parenting can often be overwhelming. We’ve read the books and done the trainings, but you are the expert on your child. Each child needs something different. Parent consultation is about working together in a supportive space to help you problem solve, try different techniques, strengthen your relationship with your child and feel more confident in your parenting.
This Isn’t About Judgment. It’s About Partnership.
Our approach to parent consultation is rooted in collaboration and respect. You are the expert on your child. Our role is to help you understand what may be underlying their behaviors, add new tools to your parenting toolkit, and work together to support emotional growth, behavioral change, and stronger family connection.
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from consultation. If you’ve ever said things like:
- “I feel like I’ve tried everything.”
- “I don’t know what’s going on with my child lately.”
- “We keep having the same argument over and over.”
- “They’re just so sensitive/anxious/angry/confused.”
- “I want to support them better, but I’m not sure how.”
…then this kind of support may be right for you.
Who Parent Consultation Is For
Consultation can be especially helpful for the parents and caregivers of:
- Children under 6, when direct therapy may not be developmentally appropriate
- Children in therapy, to reinforce or expand strategies at home
- Kids with big emotions including anxiety, irritability, or defiance
- Families navigating chronic illness or medical stress
- Children facing school challenges like procrastination or perfectionism
- Those seeking insight and connection, even when things seem “okay”
- A child or teen reluctant or refusing to attend therapy
- Young adults struggling to gain independence
This service is flexible. You can use it as a stand-alone option or alongside your child’s therapy, whether they’re seeing someone in our practice or elsewhere.
What We Talk About in Parent Consultation
Each session is tailored to your needs. Common topics include:
- Understanding emotional outbursts or “meltdowns”
- Managing anxiety, perfectionism, or rigidity in kids
- How to talk with kids about hard things (divorce, grief, illness)
- Navigating screen time, sleep, and daily transitions
- Identifying and reinforcing your child’s strengths
- Collaborating with teachers or other professionals
- Understanding how your own history may influence your parental responses
Our goal isn’t just behavior change, it’s helping you understand why the behavior is happening, and how to respond in ways that feel consistent with your values.
What Makes This Different from Coaching or Advice Columns
Parent consultation is grounded in clinical training and developmental psychology, not trends or quick fixes. We understand the research on child behavior, parent-child relationships, and emotional development. But more than that, we understand real life.
This is not one-size-fits-all advice. It’s a collaborative process that honors your family’s culture, your child’s personality, and your own parenting style.
Our Approach:
Warm, Wise, and Practical
Our sessions are:
- Compassionate: We know you’re doing your best. There’s no judgment here.
- Curious: We start with questions. What’s going on? What matters most to you?
- Concrete: We don’t just explore. We give you tools and strategies to use right away.
- Collaborative: We’ll brainstorm with you, test ideas, and adjust together.
Sometimes, just one or two sessions can bring clarity and momentum. Other times, families benefit from ongoing support over several weeks. You decide the pace.
What Sessions Look Like
- Initial Consultation: We explore your concerns, your child’s behavior, and what’s going on in the bigger picture.
- Strategy Planning: We identify small, realistic changes to try, always grounded in what works for your family.
- Follow-Up (optional): We assess what’s helping, what needs to shift, and where to go next.
We’ll consider:
- Your child’s temperament and developmental stage
- Your parenting goals and challenges
- How stress, environment, and relationships are playing a role
- Ways to shift patterns without blame or shame
This isn’t about being a “perfect parent.” It’s about finding your footing and feeling good about the path forward.
